With colder temperatures, venues in and around Boston open for outdoor skating – a fun and fairly inexpensive way to get some exercise outside. Check out some of the locations below – with rentals available, you don’t even have to own your own skates.
Most of these rinks are open well into February, but like many outdoor activities, hours and days of operation are weather-dependent so it’s best to check in advance before heading out.
Boston Common Frog Pond
In the heart of the city, this is a long-standing winter tradition. Admission price is based on height: for skaters taller than 58-inches, the cost is $6 – shorter skaters are FREE. Season passes, lunchtime admission and punch cards are available. Skate rentals are $12, and group and private skating lessons are available.

Boston Winter at City Hall Plaza
The skating path returns to City Hall Plaza this winter (though reconfigured from last year) to welcome skaters to downtown Boston. Admission is $15 for adults, $8 for kids 12 and under and FREE for children under 5. Rentals are available for $8.

Community Ice Skating at Kendall
Located near the MIT campus in Cambridge, this rink offers $5 admission for adults, $3 for students and seniors and only $1 for children 13 and younger. Hockey and figure skate rentals are available for $8 for adults and $5 for kids under 13. For frequent skaters, season passes and rentals are also available.

Winter Skate at Patriot Place
Enjoy some ice time down in Foxboro right outside Gillette Stadium. A1dmission for adults is $8; seniors and kids 12 and under are $6. Bring a new or slightly used coat donation, and take $2 off admission price. Skate rentals are $4.

MarketStreet Lynnfield Rink
Up on the North Shore, check out the rink at MarketStreet in Lynnfield. Admission for adults is $8, kids under 12 are $6, and 3 and under are FREE. Skate rentals are available for $4, and lessons are also offered.
