Monday, January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There are some events in and around Boston to commemorate his legacy, and do so on the cheap.
Head over to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for a FREE open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy interactive art activities, musical performances, community discussions and remarks by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. Thirty-minute, kid-friendly tours of the museum are also offered.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum hosts a number of activities from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. that are all FREE during its Martin Luther King Day of Service. Join in for crafts, dance performances, stories and a jazz concert. Throughout the day, Dr. King’s speeches will be projected for all to listen and learn.
Down on the Boston waterfront, the Institute of Contemporary Art is also opening its doors for FREE from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy current exhibits including photography by Nicholas Nixon and a video installation by Steve McQueen.
Metcalf Hall at the George Sherman Union at Boston University (775 Comm. Ave.) hosts the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Celebration Tribute Concert. This concert begins at 10:30 and is a non-ticketed FREE event – seating available on a first come, first served basis.
Head across the Charles River to attend the 8th Annual Cambridge Day of Service at Cambridge City Hall. Make crafts for those in need and participate in hands-on service projects. This event runs 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is FREE. Register in advance on Eventbrite.
