The time is upon us–February vacation. The kids couldn’t be more excited. The parents, well…. Of course it’ll be fun to be able to spend some more time with your kids if you can. But I’ve also compiled a list of February vacation ideas in Boston to have some fun. There are affordable events and activities to keep your kids busy throughout the week.
I’ve compiled this list of all kinds of festivals, ski deals, FREE weeks, events, crafts, and so much more. If you know of something I missed, please let me know.
February Vacation Ideas in Boston for kids:
- Family Science Days–(February 18-19) At Hynes Convention Center, preregister here.
- Experience Kissimmee–(February 18-20) Free ziplining, gators and more
- FREE Ice Skating at the Frog Pond–(February 20-24) This is more than just skating, its a week-long winter camp with snow slides, toboggans, a snow maze, snowshoeing lessons, and arts and crafts. Skate rentals are included in this deal. To avoid long waiting times, tickets for available time slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis each day at the Frog Pond starting at 10:00am.
- Children’s Winter Festival on the Common–(February 23) Race down Snowzilla (3 story inflatable toboggan slide), FREE Ice skating on the Frog Pond (see above), and other outdoor activities and giveaways! The festival will also feature a DJ from Magic 106.7 and the Museum of Science Chocolate Truck with facts about chocolate and free hot chocolate samples.
- Free Indoor Softball Clinics for girls: Girls aged 9-18 can particpate in the clinics held on February 21, 22, and 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tobin Community Center. (1481 Tremont Street, Roxbury Crossing). UMass Boston softball players will instruct the girls on the fundamentals of throwing, catching, fielding, pitching, and hitting. - JKF Presidential Library & Museum President’s Day Family Day–(February 20) There will be presidential storytelling, creative activities, musical performances, and Museum tours and hands-on programs. Admission for those 17 and under is FREE, all other visitors can go to their Facebook or Twitter for a special buzzword that will give $2 off admission prices.
- FIRE & ICE Kids Eat FREE–(February 20-24) Limit 2 free kids meals (11 year old and younger) for every 1 paid adult meal.
- Faneuil Hall Marketplace Movie Nights–(February 20-23) Each night beginning at 6:30 pm you can enjoy FREE movies as well as special discounted snacks and dinner options. Scheduled movies are Finding Dory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Secret Life of Pets, and Captain America.
- FREE Outdoor Rx events–(February 13-20) This great group, a part of the Appalachian Mountain Club, is all about getting kids outdoors and active. They regularly host FREE events but this week they’re pulling out all the stops with hikes, snowshoeing, animal tracking, and more. The events are in and around Boston and some are offered on multiple days and multiple locations. They will be dependent on the weather, so be sure to check the calendar before heading out to be sure the event is still on.
- Fun at the Farm and much more–(February 18-26) An array of family fun events including a What do Snowmen do at Night? Hike, Winter Wilderness adventures at Rocky Woods, Adventures at local mansions, Kids cooking camps, gardening, and more. Some events are free or have a nominal fee, others have a higher fee.
- Wachusett Vacation Week Fun–(February 18-26) Enjoy family friendly activities all week long. Plus the MA Audubon and the New England Aquarium will each be on hand one day to discuss various animals and how they adapt and survive in the winter. Plus save money on lift tickets when you buy them in advance.
- Model Train Weekend–(February 18-19) Watch the captivating model trains as they journey around the Farr Conference Center in Lexington. Admission is $7 per family; $5 individual.
- Feb Fest at MIT Museum–(February 20-25) The annual celebration of National Engineers Week takes place during February school vacation. There are daily hands-on activities, workshops, and more. This year’s theme is Assembly Required.
- Maple Sugaring Tours (February 25-26)
- Lunar Landing 2.0 at Peabody Essex Museum–(February 20-24) Investigate the science, technology and innovation driving lunar exploration. Immerse yourself in a portable planetarium, design a spacecraft, plan a lunar colony and much more!
- Paul Revere House activities–(February 22 & 24) Drop-In Family Activities: Exploring Home–explore some materials, techniques, and designs used in three centuries of construction in Boston. Facilitated by a staff member, families will have a chance to see historic building materials up close and learn about the architecture found in and around the Paul Revere House. Free with admission to the Revere House which ranges from $1-$5.00.
- Bright Star Touring Theatre – Black History Hall of Fame at the JFK Library–(February 22, 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM) A fast-paced performance honoring African American Heritage Month! Meet over a dozen groundbreakers and hall-of-famers who have contributed to shaping our nation’s past, present and future. Young audience volunteers help the cast bring this show to life. FREE but reservations required.
- Malik Magic for Children at Amazing Things Arts Center–(February 24) Enjoy Malik’s unique comedy magic. Adults $8, kids $5.
- Kids Dip (Eat) FREE at Melting Pot–Framingham location (February 19-24) Burlington (February 19 – March 2)

Lots of area museums offer FREE admission on certain days/times. Check out which ones you can enjoy this week, but be sure to call first to make sure the deal is valid during school vacation week.
